Meet Yourself First

There are some tables in New York that almost seem reserved for couples.

A tiny café tucked onto a side street. A candle flickering in the window. A corner booth where two people lean in close enough to whisper.

For years, I avoided those tables.

Not because they weren’t available—but because I thought they belonged to someone else.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that experiences are somehow more meaningful when they’re shared. We postpone the restaurant until someone can join us. We skip the museum because going alone feels… strange. We wait for a text before buying the ticket.

And I couldn’t help but wonder…

How many beautiful moments have we talked ourselves out of because we were waiting for company?

New York has a funny way of teaching you things. It’s loud enough to make you feel invisible, yet somehow quiet enough to introduce you to yourself.

There’s something unexpectedly liberating about ordering a table for one.

You notice the people around you.

You linger over dessert because no one is rushing you.

You begin to realize that solitude and loneliness aren’t the same thing.

One is the absence of people.

The other is the absence of connection.

And maybe the first connection we’re meant to cultivate is the one staring back at us in the mirror every morning.

So today, take yourself somewhere beautiful.

Order the coffee.

Walk through the gallery.

Sit in the park.

Leave your headphones behind.

Let the city soundtrack your afternoon.

Who knows? You might discover that the most interesting person you’ve been meaning to meet has been with you all along.
