From Gracie’s Corner to Grammy-winning musicians, Harlem Stage KIDS DAY! is turning October 24 into a celebration of creativity, music, and the magic of growing up.

There are Saturday plans, and then there are Saturday plans that make you wish you were eight years old again.

On October 24, Harlem Stage is inviting families to trade the usual weekend routine for an afternoon of music, movement, imaginative play, and artistic discovery. Its signature KIDS DAY! returns with a free, five-hour celebration featuring live performances, interactive activities, and a lineup that proves children’s entertainment can be every bit as musically sophisticated as the grown-up version.

Running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event takes place at Harlem Stage, 150 Convent Avenue, and is hosted by WQXR’s Terrance McKnight. Best of all, admission is free. Because sometimes the best things in New York don’t require a reservation at a restaurant with a three-month waiting list.

Big Talent for Little Audiences

Let’s talk about the lineup, because these are not just performers who happen to be entertaining children. They’re artists bringing serious musical credentials to a younger audience.

Making a special appearance is Gracie’s Corner, the children’s musical sensation whose colorful, energetic videos have become a favorite with families around the world. If you’ve ever found yourself humming an educational children’s song long after the little ones have gone to bed, you understand the power of music that knows how to get everyone involved.

Also taking the stage is Divi Roxx Kids, the family music project of Divinity Roxx, the acclaimed bassist, composer, producer, and Harlem Stage Associate Artistic Director. Expect rhythm, movement, and the kind of infectious musical energy that makes sitting perfectly still seem wildly overrated.

The program also features FYÜTCH & Aura V, the Grammy-winning father-daughter duo whose music celebrates family, creativity, and connection. Their album Harmony earned Aura V a place in Grammy history as the youngest individual Grammy winner at just eight years old.

Jazz gets its own moment with Lucy Kalantari and the Jazz Cats, bringing bilingual, jazz-infused music to the celebration. It’s an invitation for children to discover that music can cross languages, cultures, and generations without losing a beat.

Rounding out the musical experience are multidisciplinary artist Mélissa Smith of STEMmersive, who explores the intersection of science, technology, and immersive performance, and DJ Willy Wow, the Grammy-nominated children’s songwriter, producer, radio personality, and DJ who knows how to keep a party moving.

In other words, this is a children’s event with a lineup that parents, grandparents, and music lovers can appreciate, too.

More Than a Concert

Of course, no five-hour family celebration would be complete without a little room to run around.

KIDS DAY! will feature face painting, games, bouncy houses, free food trucks, healthy snacks, and a children’s book giveaway. There’s also a special Blast Off! Astronaut Training experience with Mélissa Smith at 10 a.m., bringing an imaginative, hands-on element to the day.

The festivities are designed to make the arts accessible, welcoming children into an environment where they can listen, move, explore, and discover something new. And in a city where family outings can become surprisingly expensive, a free day of cultural programming is a welcome addition to the weekend calendar.

Harlem Stage’s philosophy is that young audiences deserve adventurous artistic experiences that reflect the diversity and possibilities of the world around them. That’s a lovely idea, but it’s also an important one. Exposure to music, theater, and creative expression can help children discover interests they didn’t know they had.

Maybe a child comes for the bouncy houses and leaves talking about jazz. Maybe another discovers a love of rhythm, storytelling, or the stage. Perhaps the adults arrive thinking they’re simply entertaining the children and end up enjoying the performances just as much.

That’s the wonderful thing about the arts. You never quite know which experience will stay with you.

Your Saturday, Sorted

Harlem Stage KIDS DAY! takes place Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 150 Convent Avenue in Manhattan. The event is free, and the celebration continues rain or shine, with free rain ponchos available on-site.

Families can find event details and RSVP through Harlem Stage’s official KIDS DAY! page.

Our advice? Bring the children, invite the grandparents, wear comfortable shoes, and leave a little room in the schedule for spontaneous fun. The best family memories rarely happen when everyone is watching the clock.

And who knows? The next great musician, dancer, or theater artist might be the child standing beside you, enthusiastically dancing to the music.

Question of the Day

What was the first musical performance, concert, or live show that made you fall in love with the arts? And what would you love to see today’s children discover for themselves?
