In a City Obsessed With What’s Next, Perhaps the Greatest Luxury Is Having Nowhere to Be

By Mood Magazine NYC

New York has a question for you.

What are you doing next?

The meeting ends.

What’s next?

Dinner finishes.

Where are we going?

Saturday arrives.

What are the plans?

Even rest has somehow become another activity to optimize.

Yoga at 8.

Brunch at 10.

Museum at noon.

Shopping at 2.

Dinner at 7.

Drinks at 9.

Then Sunday night we announce that we’re exhausted from our relaxing weekend.

Perhaps we’re doing this wrong.

WHAT IF YOU DID NOTHING?

Not forever.

We’re not suggesting you abandon your responsibilities and disappear into Central Park.

Although, occasionally, we understand the temptation.

We’re talking about an hour.

No destination.

No appointment.

No content creation.

No productivity.

No reason to be anywhere else.

Just you and some unclaimed time.

When was the last time you had that?

NEW YORK MAKES BUSY LOOK IMPORTANT

There is status in being unavailable.

“I’m slammed.”

“I’m running.”

“I have three things tonight.”

We say these things almost proudly.

But a full calendar and a full life are not necessarily the same thing.

Sometimes the person sitting alone beside the Hudson watching the sun disappear has understood something the rest of us haven’t.

You don’t have to maximize every moment for it to matter.

TRY THIS

Go to Central Park.

Or Riverside Park.

Or Morningside Park.

Or the waterfront.

Find somewhere to sit.

Put your phone away.

Now do absolutely nothing for thirty minutes.

Don’t meditate correctly.

Don’t count your steps.

Don’t turn it into a wellness challenge.

Don’t take a picture captioned self-care.

Just sit there.

Notice things.

The dog pulling its owner toward something fascinating.

Two people on a first date.

A child discovering a pigeon.

Leaves moving.

Someone laughing.

Your own thoughts finally catching up with you.

This is your life too.

LUXURY IS SOMETIMES EMPTY SPACE

We spend enormous amounts of money creating the conditions for peace.

Flights.

Resorts.

Spas.

Retreats.

Beautiful hotel rooms.

And all of those things can be wonderful.

But peace occasionally costs nothing.

It simply requires that you stop filling every available space.

An empty hour isn’t wasted.

An unscheduled afternoon isn’t irresponsible.

A Sunday without plans isn’t boring.

Sometimes nothing is exactly what you needed.

LET THE CITY KEEP MOVING WITHOUT YOU

New York will continue.

The trains will run.

Restaurants will fill.

People will hurry.

Deals will happen.

Someone will open a new place everyone suddenly needs to visit.

You can catch up tomorrow.

For now, find a bench.

Sit down.

Look around.

Breathe.

You have nowhere to be.

And for once, that’s the plan.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

When was the last time you gave yourself an hour with absolutely nothing scheduled?

No phone. No errands. No work. No destination.

Could you do it this week?

STAY IN THE MOOD

A better life isn’t always about adding something.

Sometimes it’s about making room.

Let Mood Magazine NYC help you discover ways to live with more curiosity, culture, beauty, rest, and intention.

Listen to WHRL Mood Radio. Watch Mood Television. Experience Harlem Collective Opera, Harlem Boys Choir, and Harlem Chamber Orchestra.

Then occasionally turn everything off.

Go outside.

Sit somewhere beautiful.

And simply be there.

Mind. Body. Spirit. Culture. Harlem to the World.

Live Your Mood
