Why DIY Kings Is More Than Just a Workshop

By Mood Magazine Staff

In Harlem, we know that greatness often rises from grit. From makeshift stages to sidewalk sermons, from repurposed storefronts to reborn brownstones, this community has been built—and rebuilt—by hand, by vision, and by necessity. That’s the spirit behind DIY Kings, a new Life Event series from Mood Magazine, launching this fall at the Harlem Collective Theater and lifestyle lounge.

But this isn’t just about fixing what’s broken around you. It’s about reclaiming what’s been neglected within you.

DIY Kings is where practical meets personal. It’s where home repair and self-repair go hand in hand. Where learning how to patch a wall becomes a metaphor for patching up your confidence. Where refreshing your wardrobe becomes a ritual of identity reclamation. And where walking into a room styled head-to-toe in secondhand power becomes a quiet revolution.

“We built this series for the men—and young adults—who’ve been told they have to figure it all out on their own,” says Mood founder Jarvus Ricardo Hester. “DIY Kings is the answer to that lie. You don’t have to do it alone. You just need the right space, the right tools, and someone to remind you who you are.”

Each event features rotating themes:

Home & Personal Space: How to transform small apartments on a budget

Wardrobe Workshops: Styling from thrift to fitted, reclaiming identity through clothes

Barber & Grooming Labs: Simple ways to restore confidence and presence

Emotional Skill-Building: Group conversations on manhood, reinvention, and mental health

Thrift & Restore Pop-Ups: Curated selections from local thrift stores and Goodwill-style organizations

DIY Kings is unapologetically Black, deeply practical, and spiritually rooted. It honors the truth that sometimes, the most radical thing a man can do is learn to take care of himself—and let others help him do it.

And Harlem is the perfect place for this kind of transformation. “This community has always been a forge,” says Hester. “We’re just bringing the fire back into people’s hands.”

Come for the clothes, the tools, and the tips. Leave with a renewed sense of self.
