Title: One Smile, One Hello: The Campaign Changing Harlem One Moment at a Time
Byline: Jarvus Ricardo Hester
In a world moving fast and minds moving faster, there’s a quiet power in slowing down — just enough to smile. Just enough to say hello. It’s simple, but it’s revolutionary.
It started with a conversation — two friends, Danny and I, talking about how often we don’t stop to help someone because we fear getting pulled into their chaos. Especially in cities like New York — and especially in neighborhoods like Harlem — that self-protection becomes cultural. But what if protection didn’t mean separation? What if we could still be kind… without burning out?
That’s when Danny said something small that felt big: “I try to say one hello a day. Just one. And smile at someone too.”
That was it. That was the spark.
Introducing The Smile Campaign — a quarterly Harlem-wide movement reminding us that one smile can shift a mood, and one hello can create hope. It’s our way of being the change we want to see. No pressure, no performance — just a moment of connection, offered freely.
Here’s how you can join the campaign:
- Smile at one person a day — even if they don’t smile back.
- Say hello to someone — even if it’s quick.
- Use the hashtag #SmileHarlem to share your story, photo, or video.
- Print our window signs and post them in your shop, apartment, school, or church:
“This is a Smile Zone. One Smile. One Hello.” - Follow along at moodmagazinenyc.org/smile
Because sometimes, healing doesn’t start with a policy. It starts with a pause.
One Smile. One Hello. One Harlem.
Let’s lift the mood — together.
