Who We Are

Mood Radio is the curated audio platform of Mood Magazine — created for listeners who believe culture, music, and storytelling should add meaning to everyday life.

We are artists, storytellers, cultural curators, and community builders using sound to guide how people wake up, move through their day, and wind down.

At the heart of Mood Radio is Harlem Speaks, our signature late-night spoken word hour — a space where voices from Harlem, the African American diaspora, and global Black expression come alive. Harlem Speaks is the show that defines the station, gives it authority, and invites listeners into a nightly ritual of culture and storytelling.

Nurses say enough, and strike!

Nurses across the city are taking a stand — not just for fair pay, but for safer hospitals, manageable patient loads, and dignity on the job. This week’s strike brings long-simmering frustrations into public view, as frontline healthcare workers say the system is stretched too thin and patients are paying the price.

Michiko & Hatchin: The Black-Led Anime You Need to Know

In 2008, Michiko & Hatchin quietly reshaped what anime could be. Centering two Black female leads in a Brazilian-inspired world, the series follows Michiko Malandro, bold and unpredictable, and Hatchin, a young girl searching for safety and belonging.

Directed by Sayo Yamamoto and produced by Studio Manglobe, the show treats Blackness as ordinary and complex, not as a talking point or token. The music, by Alexandre Kassin and Shinichirō Watanabe, infuses the story with Afro-Brazilian rhythms, grounding the characters’ journey in authentic culture.

Nearly twenty years later, Michiko & Hatchin still feels ahead of its time, offering a blueprint for representation done right.

On This Day January 24

On This Day in Black History – January 24

On this day, we honor Dr. Benjamin Banneker, the self-taught African-American mathematician, astronomer, and surveyor whose brilliance left an indelible mark on American history. Despite living in a time when opportunities for Black scientists were extremely limited, Banneker achieved remarkable accomplishments.

He is best known for his accurate almanacs, which included astronomical calculations, weather predictions, and other scientific observations. Banneker’s contributions were pivotal in the survey and design of Washington, D.C., helping to lay the foundation for the nation’s capital.

Over her career, she earned five Grammy Awards and the National Medal of Arts in 1991, cementing her place in classical music history. Yet alongside her brilliance, reports in The New York Times and Opera News noted that she could be demanding and exacting, with the Metropolitan Opera publicly parting ways with her in 1994 over professional differences.

Howard Thurman: The Quiet Architect Behind the Dream

Before the movement found its voice, it found its stillness.

Howard Thurman was a theologian, philosopher, and mystic whose teachings deeply influenced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At a time when the world demanded action, Thurman insisted on reflection — believing that inner freedom was the foundation of outer change.

He taught that peace is not something we stumble into. It is something we practice. It is what allows us to stand firm without becoming hardened, and to resist injustice without losing our souls.

As we conclude our celebration of Dr. King, we honor the man who helped shape his spiritual grounding — reminding us that movements are sustained not only by courage, but by peace.
