There is a moment in every dating life when “Netflix and chill” stops being about Netflix.
We know the setup.
You have been talking. The chemistry is there. He suggests coming over. Maybe he brings wine. Maybe he says he’ll order dinner. The playlist is suspiciously good. The lighting is suddenly very intentional.
And then you find yourself wondering:
Is this actually a date, or am I about to become a very convenient evening?
Ladies, let’s talk.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with chemistry. There is nothing wrong with desire. And there is certainly nothing wrong with deciding that you want to take things further.
But access is not commitment.
Just because someone is interested in your body doesn’t automatically mean they are interested in building a future with you.
And if what you ultimately want is a relationship, why give someone the benefits of a relationship before you’ve discovered whether they actually intend to participate in one?

THE COOKIE IS NOT THE CURRENCY
Let’s retire the idea that dating is about withholding sex as some kind of prize that a man earns.
That’s not the point.
Your body is yours.
The point is investment.
Before you make a sexual investment, pay attention to whether he’s making an emotional, relational, and practical investment.
Is he taking you out?
Does he make plans?
Does he follow through?
Does he want to know you beyond your appearance?
Does he remember what you tell him?
Does he respect your boundaries?
Does he talk about the future in a way that includes you?
Most importantly:
Is his behavior consistent with what he says he wants?
Because a man can say, “I’m looking for something serious,” while behaving like he is looking for something to do on Thursday night.
Believe the behavior.

SO, WHAT SHOULD WE WATCH?
If we’re going to spend the evening on the couch, let’s at least choose movies that give us something to talk about afterward.
Here are five Black films perfect for a date night, especially when you’re trying to determine whether the person beside you is worth a second date.

1. LOVE JONES
The mood: Poetry, jazz, chemistry, complicated feelings.
This is the movie for the person who believes intellectual chemistry is sexy.
Darius and Nina connect through conversation, creativity, attraction, and that particular kind of Chicago cool that makes everyone suddenly want to write poetry.
Watch this one closely.
The attraction is obvious, but so are the complications.
Date-night question:
Do you think chemistry is enough to build a relationship?

2. THE BEST MAN
The mood: Friendship, secrets, history, and relationship drama.
A wedding weekend brings old friends together, but unresolved relationships come along for the ride.
This is an excellent reminder that history matters.
Who someone has been can tell you something about who they are becoming.
And if you’re dating someone, eventually you need to know more than how good the conversation is on your couch.
You need to know how they handle conflict, friendship, loyalty, responsibility, and truth.
Date-night question:
Would you want to know everything about someone’s romantic history before becoming serious with them?

3. BROWN SUGAR
The mood: Friendship, ambition, music, and the question of whether your person has been right in front of you all along.
This one is for the hopeless romantics.
Sidney and Dre have history, chemistry, and a friendship that makes you wonder how long two people can stand next to the obvious before finally acknowledging it.
It also asks a bigger question:
What happens when love and ambition collide?
Pay attention to whether your date has dreams.
Then pay attention to whether he has a plan for them.
Because chemistry is wonderful.
But a future requires more than chemistry.

4. BOOMERANG
The mood: Attraction, ego, career, and learning what women actually want.
A classic for a reason.
Marcus thinks he has relationships figured out until someone turns the mirror around.
And suddenly the man who thought he understood women discovers that being charming isn’t the same thing as being emotionally available.
That makes this one particularly useful for date night.
Watch your date’s reactions.
Does he laugh at the lessons?
Does he recognize himself?
Or does every woman in the movie somehow become “crazy”?
Ladies, pay attention.

5. THE PHOTOGRAPH
The mood: Romance, vulnerability, family history, and grown-up intimacy.
This is the one for when you want romance without all the unnecessary chaos.
It explores what happens when two people begin to open themselves to one another while confronting the histories that shaped them.
It’s slower.
Softer.
More intentional.
Which is exactly why it belongs on this list.
Because sometimes the sexiest thing a person can offer you is patience.

AND THEN THERE’S THE REAL DATE
Here’s where “Netflix and chill” gets interesting.
Don’t invite him over simply because you’re afraid that saying no will make him lose interest.
If a man disappears because you want to take your time, congratulations.
You just saved yourself time.
The man who genuinely wants to know you will not need immediate physical access to remain interested.
Let him court you.
Let him plan.
Let him pursue.
Let him demonstrate consistency.
Let him show you that he can invest in something he cannot immediately consume.
Because the question isn’t:
“How long should I wait before having sex?”
The better question is:
“Has this person shown me enough to make me comfortable making that investment?”
There is no universal timeline.
Three dates doesn’t guarantee character.
Three months doesn’t guarantee commitment.
A year doesn’t guarantee forever.
But time gives you information.
And information is valuable.
THE MOOD RULE
Don’t use sex to create a relationship that doesn’t exist yet.
Let the relationship reveal itself first.
You don’t need to play games.
You don’t need to manipulate anyone.
You don’t need to pretend you’re not attracted to him.
You simply need to remember that desire and discernment can exist in the same room.
So yes.
Order the food.
Pour the wine.
Pick the movie.
Get comfortable.
Laugh.
Flirt.
Kiss if you want to.
And if the evening starts heading somewhere else?
You are allowed to say:
“Not tonight. I’m still getting to know you.”
Then watch what happens.
Because sometimes the most revealing part of a date isn’t what someone does when you say yes.
It’s what they do when you say not yet.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
When you’re dating, what signs tell you that someone is genuinely investing in your future rather than simply pursuing immediate chemistry?
