New York Is Not a City You Visit. It Is a City You Enter.

By Jarvus Ricardo Hester
Editor-in-Chief, Mood Magazine NYC

There are a thousand ways to see New York.

You can stand in Times Square beneath the lights. You can walk Fifth Avenue with shopping bags in your hands. You can photograph the skyline from Brooklyn, take the ferry past the Statue of Liberty, see a Broadway show, eat dinner downtown, and return home believing you have experienced New York.

But New York has always been more than the places printed on a postcard.

The real New York lives between the destinations.

It is the conversation overheard on a Harlem sidewalk. The pianist playing somewhere behind an open window. The neighborhood restaurant where the owner still knows the names of the families who have been coming for twenty years. The gallery you almost walked past. The bookstore where someone recommends exactly the book you needed. The church that has anchored a block for generations.

New York rewards curiosity.

And this month, Mood Magazine wants to be your invitation to become curious again.

Welcome to The New York Issue.

We created this issue as a cultural concierge to one of the greatest cities in the world. Whether you have lived here your entire life, arrived yesterday with a suitcase, or are experiencing New York from thousands of miles away, we want these pages to help you discover something you didn’t know was waiting for you.

Not simply where to go.

But how to experience it.

Inside this issue, The Mood Guide comes alive as our curated introduction to some of New York’s most exceptional experiences. We take you beyond the expected and into the restaurants, hotels, cultural institutions, galleries, performances, neighborhoods, and experiences that make this city extraordinary.

But luxury, to us, has never meant simply spending more money.

Sometimes luxury is access.

Sometimes it is time.

Sometimes it is discovering that one of the most remarkable experiences in New York costs absolutely nothing.

That is why our Community Guide sits alongside our luxury recommendations. Museums, galleries, concerts, community events, public spaces, and cultural experiences remind us that this city belongs to everyone.

And then we leave New York.

Not very far.

Through Mood Adventures, we’re exploring what happens when you give yourself permission to get away for a day or a weekend. Some of life’s greatest resets may be waiting only two or three hours beyond the city.

We’re also beginning a journey that is deeply important to us: exploring America’s historic Black destinations and communities. Places where generations of Black families built spaces for rest, ownership, safety, prosperity, culture, and joy. Their stories belong in the larger story of American travel, and Mood intends to help tell them.

Throughout these pages, you will also encounter the larger ecosystem behind this publication.

Harlem Collective Opera.
Harlem Boys Choir.
Harlem Chamber Orchestra.
WHRL Mood Radio.
Mood Television.

These are not separate projects competing for attention. They are parts of the same idea.

Culture can improve a life.

A concert can change someone’s understanding of music.

A story can change someone’s understanding of another person.

Travel can change someone’s understanding of the world.

A museum can awaken curiosity.

A meal can become a memory.

A choir can give a child somewhere to belong.

And sometimes a magazine can place all of those possibilities into someone’s hands.

That is what we are trying to build.

Not simply media.

Not simply performances.

An ecosystem of experiences designed to make life richer.

September has always represented a kind of return. We return from summer. We return to school. We return to work. The cultural season awakens. New York begins moving at full speed again.

But perhaps this year we don’t have to return to exactly the same lives we left.

Perhaps we can look again.

Walk another block.

Enter the gallery.

Take the train somewhere unfamiliar.

Buy the ticket.

Listen to the music.

Support the neighborhood business.

Sit in the park.

Leave the city for a weekend.

Come back seeing it differently.

There are eight million stories surrounding us, and countless experiences waiting just beyond our routines.

This issue cannot possibly contain all of New York.

It isn’t supposed to.

It only needs to do one thing.

Open the door.

Welcome to New York.

Now go experience it.
