Just when it seemed New York might catch its breath, winter reminds us who’s really in charge. Temperatures hover near freezing on Wednesday and Thursday, giving us a fleeting taste of sunshine — the perfect excuse to step outside, even if only briefly. But don’t let that fool you: patches of black ice could still surprise you on the morning commute.

By Friday, clouds roll back in as an Arctic front approaches, with snow showers expected Friday night into early Saturday. While only a light dusting is forecast in most areas, travel could become slippery, and jackets, scarves, and gloves will be essential armor.

Saturday brings the real bite: dangerously cold air combined with strong winds will push wind chills below zero, making outdoor activity hazardous. Thankfully, temperatures are expected to gradually improve next week, giving us a chance to shake off winter’s grip — at least for a little while.

Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg urges everyone to heed the AccuWeather Alert, take extra care in the cold, and remember that even a little winter sunshine is fleeting in the city that never sleeps.
