Here are some African American politicians who are running for office in the June 2025 New York primary elections:
Mayoral Race:
- Eric Adams (Incumbent): Running as an independent.
- Michael Blake: Former state assemblyman.
- Paperboy Prince; a content creator, community activist and musical artist whose 2021 run for mayor garnered attention on social media for their fanciful and groundbreaking scenes.
Prince, who challenged Representative Nydia Velázquez in 2020, called for free health care, abolishing the police and granting a universal basic income for all New Yorkers.
The artist’s clown makeup has become a signature part of their look on the campaign trail this year. On May 2, they released a song, “Utopia Plan,” that lays out their vision for the city. - Adrienne Adams: City Council speaker.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of and visiting with Mayoral candidate Dr. Selma Bartholomew. I had a blast chatting with her. Her energy is vibrant and full of life and an optimistic outlook for her future and the future of New York.
With a declaration that she’s our next Mayor, she speaks life into her destiny. She believes that she is the hope that New Yorkers are so desperately looking for.
Dr. B’s background in education provides her the skills needed to lead our city into its bright future. With plans to renovate our educational program, and a passion for the homeless and those dealing with mental health. Bartholomew believes she’s the voice needed to redirect the trajectory of our city.
Her warm spirit and her compassionate heart is what she and her army of volunteers believe is exactly what the Mayors office needs to clean our streets and develop arts and tourism programs to fuel and bring our city back to its former glory. Get out and vote and make your voice heard.
